Introduction

The main goal of the course is to conduct a critical discussion of the different types of multicultural and national rights, their possible justifications, and their applications to concrete cases. In order to facilitate this, two general topics will be discussed: the concepts of the nation and of cultural groups; a normative typology of nationalist ideologies and types of multicultural programs. These then will be applied to more particular issues such as national self-determination, cultural preservation rights, nationalism and immigration, with special attention to some cases (e.g. Israel’s Law of Return, refusal to allow the return of Palestinian refugees, etc.).
