Introduction

This course is intended to provide a basic introduction to lexical semantics, with emphasis on basic concepts of meaning analysis and its application to the study of languages in the multi-cultural world, both in metropolitan and in aboriginal settings, involving English, Chinese, and some other languages in comparative perspectives. This will be achieved with the usage of a wide range of examples and exercises in the class. Throughout this course we will examine a range of core topics concerning word meaning, with the focus being on understanding what the issues are. On successful completion of the course, students will be familiar with what constitutes the domain of general semantic studies. They will have been introduced to, and reflected upon, a number of key topics in the field, and will acquire some hands-on experience in analyzing real-life examples.
