Introduction |
The world is facing increasingly complex challenges. A range of social and environmental issues, such as inequality, poverty, food insecurity, and health concerns, are not only persisting but becoming more pressing. These problems require creative and innovative solutions, but more importantly, they demand active participation from individuals. Given the limited resources available, social entrepreneurship has emerged as a promising approach to addressing these societal challenges. This course aims to equip students with the essential knowledge of social entrepreneurship while inspiring them to find meaning in their work and potentially pursue a path that contributes to society. It begins with the premise that individuals can make a meaningful impact through the vehicle of social entrepreneurship. For that reasons, the course is designed for those who seek to use their skills and knowledge to tackle societal challenges, or for students who aspire to become change agents and apply their passion to address these issues. Of course, it is also open to anyone curious about the field who wants to learn more about social entrepreneurship. The course starts by exploring the principles of entrepreneurship, how to identify and evaluate innovative ideas for solving societal problems, and how to assess the impact of these solutions. While the course does not aim to delve deeply into the theoretical aspects of social entrepreneurship, it focuses on helping students with a passion for social impact develop an entrepreneurial mindset and understand how to apply it. Using tools such as design thinking and the business model canvas, students will gain the necessary knowledge to create value and strategically develop social enterprises. The learning objectives of this course include: • Co creation and shape the idea to solve societal problems • Researching and finding articles, examples and people outside the class to support their final project • Learning and presenting in multiple modalities (video, presentation, papers) • Questioning, building social enterprise ideas, discussing and cooperating with classmates • Assessing their own strengths and weaknesses and develop their entrepreneurial skills Course outcomes • By the end of this course, students should be able to: • Understand the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship • Recognise opportunities and generate ideas of social enterprise • Know how to use system thinking and design thinking as a means for idea generation and problem analysis • Identify and analyse opportunities to solve societal and environmental challenges • Write social venture business plans. |
