Introduction

Cultivation, harvesting and food production are essential activities for the reproduction of hu-man life. Urbanising society has meant a much greater distance from these processes. Cheap, processed food, readily available with the labour of others has meant a deskilling of the human population in relation to being able to sustain itself. This course explores the routes and roots of our current food ecology. By considering the role of capitalism, colonialism and globalisation, the current state of food is considered from a social, cultural and economic perspective. Alterna-tives to the biochemical-electromechanical system are considered.
