Introduction |
This course is intended to analyze the decision-making process and current policy issues in external European (Member States, EC: European Communities, CFSP: Common Foreign and Security Policies, and CSDP: Common Security and Defence Policies) foreign policies towards the developing world. We will examine theories, concepts and case studies to explain the nature of contemporary EU foreign policies. Themes include: Theorising EU foreign policies, Post-colonialism, Ethics of intervention, European Military intervention, Instruments of Security Policies, and also issues such as Asylum and Migration policies. We will focus on current policies towards unstable areas in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
This course aims to promote a critical engagement with material in the International Relations and European Foreign Policy field, provide an insight into the link between theory and practice of security policies, provide an understanding of how the European Union reacts to international crises and provide a basis for further study or careers in government, international organizations, media and the military
