Introduction

This course won the Australian National Award for Humanities teaching. It uses innovative methods (graphics, concepts and probabilities) in order to take students through the whole of world history without immersing them in endless information. The course is analytical and conceptual and provides prescaffolding for efficient learning and research. It does not teach students about the topics-it aims to change their cognition by the way topics are introduced. The course has been given many times, and -in Korea and Japan as well as Australia. Students and teachers love the course because it is empowering and very exciting. There is no text book. However, students will be given a hand book of readings, data sheets and concept notes. Use of these will vary depending on how the students respond to the pedagogy. This course is ideal for staff and postgraduates as well as for academically strong undergraduate students. It is not suited to students with poor English or students who are not at home with concepts. A student interested in one period of Chinese history, for example, may find the course too difficult for them and too different from any course they have ever done before.
