Introduction

This course is designed to introduce students to the formal study of representative works of Hispanic literature. It focuses on the critical reading and interpretation of texts from Spain and Latin America, which cover a variety of periods, movements, and styles. It offers students an elementary yet comprehensive introduction to literary analysis and the understanding of Hispanic culture. The course provides students with opportunities to develop reading, writing and speaking proficiency in Spanish, with emphasis on critical reading and analytical writing. Students will examine texts from various literary genres, including fiction, poetry and drama. The course not only provides students with opportunities to reflect on many voices and cultures embedded in the variety of texts, but also allows them to acquire the technical vocabulary needed to describe and debate literary and culture issues appropriately.
